Anna and Hiram Schwartz, along with their 2-year old son Boaz, are living a largely typical Amish life as a married couple. Though Hiram is not loving and often overly strict with Anna and Boaz, they do not complain and manage to take life as it comes. However, during what is normally one of the busiest times of the year for Amish men, Hiram is sluggish and more bearish than usual. The next morning, Anna finds him dead in their bed…and suspicions against her immediately begin to mount.
Using little Boaz as a distraction from her shock, Anna faces the scrutiny of the bishop and the entire community when Hiram’s best friend believes that his death was no accident. He blatantly accuses Anna, and convinces Bishop Miller to investigate her further, although everyone knows that Hiram was less than loving toward his wife and child. She is excommunicated pending the outcome, and must face her sadness, confusion and widowhood alone now.
Rebekah’s voice lowered as if there were listening ears around them. “The bishop did not have him properly embalmed. Dathan had already spoken to him. They put him in the casket, but he has not been buried yet and will not be until they are done with the investigation.”
Chills ran through Anna as she considered the concept that her bishop and other members of her community had hidden this fact from her. “I cannot believe this,” she murmured. She glanced upward, to beseech God for answers. “This is simply not believable...”
Ezra Fisher has known Anna and her family for years, and has even worked with Hiram on occasion. However, like everyone else in their community, he knows that the deceased was a hard man to understand, often lazy and usually neglectful of his promises. When Dathan Yotter goes out of his way to make everyone suspect Anna, he wonders at the man’s motives. Could the pretty widow have had something to do with her husband’s death—and if not, why would Dathan try to make it seem so?
Although new feelings are beginning to blossom within him toward the beautiful widow and her little boy, Ezra vows to stand by her side and discover the truth. He will get to the bottom of the mystery, and teach the community that things are not always as they seem.
Can Anna prove her innocence and avoid being blamed for the death of the husband who likely never loved her?
How will Ezra prove that Hiram’s death was not the fault of his widow—or will the only woman he’s ever truly loved be locked away or shunned for life?
